Route 1 southbound drainage improvements announced in South Brunswick
NJDOT to upgrade inadequate facilities at Ridge Road jughandle
and Wynwood Drive intersection
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced the start of a drainage improvement project along Route 1 southbound to upgrade the existing, inadequate facilities located at the Ridge Road jughandle ramp and a the Wynwood Drive intersection in South Brunswick, Middlesex County.
NJDOT’s contractor is scheduled to begin preliminary construction activities next week including site mobilization and sign installation, requiring periodic shoulder closures.
To better facilitate drainage of stormwater from the roadway the contractor will construct new underground drainage facilities at the Ridge Road jughandle ramp on Route 1 southbound (milepost 14.6) and provide new inlets along the curb. New stormwater drainage facilities including additional inlets and pipes will also be constructed at the Wynwood Drive intersection (milepost 17.0).
The improved drainage systems will help mitigate flooding and icing hazards on the roadway thereby enhancing driver safety along this busy Route 1 corridor. Once NJDOT has completed the drainage improvements, the roadway will then be resurfaced to provide a smoother asphalt surface.
Construction operations that might impact mainline Route 1 will be limited to off-peak hours – from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (two travel lanes maintained during the day) and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the week and from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends - to minimize the impact this project will have on Route 1 motorists. Single-lane closures will be allowed overnight, but one travel lane will be maintained at all times. There will be day time construction operations at the Ridge Road jughandle ramp, behind the construction barrier.
Variable message signs will be utilized to notify motorists of any upcoming traffic pattern changes on Route 1.
All required environmental permits and clearances have been obtained in advanace of the construction. The project is anticipated to be complete by the end of the year.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
