Christie Administration
announces
32 Local Aid grants for
infrastructure projects
More than $23
million will fund local road and
bridge projects
(Trenton) -
The Christie Administration today
announced that all 21 counties and
11 separate municipalities will share
$23.2 million in Local Aid grants to
support road and bridge projects, bringing
the total of state funding for local
projects to nearly $121 million since
May.
The grants include $1 million to
each of New Jersey's 21 counties through
the Local Bridges, Future Needs program,
and $2.3 million in Local Aid Infrastructure
Fund (LAIF) grants shared by 11 municipalities.
Both types of grants are state-funded
and help local governments advance
projects without placing a burden
on property taxpayers. NJDOT's FY
14 capital program provides for $190
million in grants through a variety
of Local Aid programs.
“The bridge grants will support preventive
maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement
projects throughout New Jersey, while
the LAIF grants will enable municipalities
to promote safety through projects
that improve roadways and other transportation
infrastructure,” said NJDOT Commissioner
James Simpson. “The Christie Administration
supports the Local Aid program because
it understands how the program benefits
local governments and taxpayers.”
Under the $25 million county bridge
grant program (pdf
57k), each
county is awarded $1 million annually,
with another $4 million distributed
based on a review of funding requests
submitted by the counties. LAIF
grants are awarded periodically
through the New Jersey Department
of Transportation to help municipalities
or counties respond to emergency
circumstances or other priority
needs.
The LAIF grants (pdf
13k) in the current round of funding
range in size from $45,000 for
a resurfacing project in Stow Creek
Township (Cumberland County) to
$300,000 grants for emergency dredging
related to Superstorm Sandy in
Downe Township (Cumberland County)
and road projects in South Harrison
and Franklin townships in Gloucester
County.
The grants are administered by the
NJDOT Division of Local
Aid and Economic Development.
