Railroad-crossing repairs announced in Sparta
Priority safety work will require Route 15 southbound
detour this weekend
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a priority railroad crossing repair project that will require the temporary closure of Route 15 southbound this weekend in Sparta Township, Sussex County.
Route 15 is scheduled to be closed to traffic in the southbound direction at the freight rail crossing from 6 p.m. on Friday, October 4, until around 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 5. Traffic will be detoured using Houses Corner Road (CR 669) which becomes Limecrest Road, Newton Sparta Road (CR 616), and South Sparta Avenue (CR 517).
Access will be maintained to residential properties and businesses on either side of the rail line. If the work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.
The work is necessary to stabilize and level out the southbound side of the existing concrete freight rail crossing bed. The subbase underneath the crossing has been eroded by storm damage. This project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
