Railroad-crossing repairs announced for Mt. Vernon Street in Ridgefield Park
Necessary safety work will require road closure and detour
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a planned railroad crossing repair project that will require the closure of Mt. Vernon Street in Ridgefield Park, Bergen County.
Mt. Vernon Street is scheduled to be closed to traffic in both directions at the freight rail crossing just west of Railroad Avenue from 8 a.m. on Friday, November 1, until around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6. Traffic will be detoured using Railroad Avenue, River Road, and Cross Street.
Access will be maintained to residential properties and businesses on either side of the rail line. If the work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide a safer and smoother railroad crossing in Ridgefield Park the freight rail contractor will replace the existing crossing with a new concrete freight rail crossing bed, install new tracks, and repave the asphalt approaches. This project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
