Bridge deck replacement project to enter second stage of construction this weekend

On Friday night, November 8, NJDOT’s contractor, R.E. Pierson Construction, is scheduled to set up a new construction zone in the center portion of the bridge, requiring the long-term closure of the middle travel lane. Two travel lanes will be maintained - split around either side of the new work zone - during morning and evening peak period commuting hours. As with the previous stage of construction, the contractor will be allowed to periodically close an additional lane, thereby reducing Route 70 westbound down to one travel lane, during overnight and mid-day hours for crucial deck pouring operations. Motorists destined for the Browning Road/Marlton Pike ramp are advised to stay in the right lane as they approach the bridge to be able to access the exit ramp.

The $3.9 million project began construction in April with the contractor installing temporary bridge supports and replacing the deck and parapets for the right travel lane and under the existing sidewalk. The bridge deck replacement work is being accomplished in three stages – one travel lane at time – necessitating a reduction from three travel lanes to two lanes on Route 70 westbound on the bridge throughout construction. The project is anticipated for completion with all three travel lanes restored this winter.

All available travel lanes on Route 38 underneath the bridge are open during daytime hours utilizing traffic shifts, however overnight single-lane closures are allowed on Route 38 to accommodate construction activities at the bridge. The Route 70 westbound exit ramp to Route 38 eastbound remains open throughout construction.
