Railroad-crossing repairs announced at intersection
of W. Main Street and Throckmorton Street in Freehold
Necessary safety work will require the intersection
to be closed for five days
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a planned railroad crossing repair project that will require the closure of the W. Main Street (CR 537) intersection with Throckmorton Street (CR 522) for five days next week in Freehold Township, Monmouth County.
The intersection is scheduled to be closed to traffic in both directions at the Conrail freight rail crossing that runs through the intersection just west of Route 79 (South Street) from 7 a.m. on Monday, November 18, until around 7 p.m. on Friday, November 22.
• W. Main Street motorists will be directed to use Route 79 to Park Avenue back to W. Main Street.
• Throckmorton Street motorists will be directed to use Broad Street to Manalapan Avenue to W. Main Street to Park Avenue to Route 79.
• Access will be maintained to residential properties and businesses on either side of the rail line.
If the work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide a safer and smoother freight railroad crossing in Freehold the rail contractor will replace the existing crossing with a new concrete freight rail crossing bed, install new tracks, and repave the asphalt approaches. This approximately $210,000 project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
