NJDOT announces Route 33 resurfacing project
in Freehold and Manalapan townships
Almost five miles of deteriorated pavement to be improved in Monmouth County along with additional safety upgrades
(Trenton) - NJDOT today announced a project to resurface almost five miles of Route 33 in both directions through Freehold and Manalapan townships in Monmouth County.
NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt Company, is scheduled to start preliminary construction activities including sign installation and guide rail repair work next week, requiring shoulder closures. Initial construction work will focus on guide rail, curb and signalized intersections. Milling and paving operations on Route 33 will not begin until next spring (2014).
The $7.1 million project will resurface Route 33 in both directions with a new surface course of asphalt pavement between Halls Mills Road in Freehold (milepost 29) and the vicinity of the Route 33 Business western merge and Manalapan Brook in Manalapan. The project will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway at each location, including all travel lanes, turn lanes, shoulders and median openings.
Upgraded roadway striping, overhead signage and ADA-compliant curb ramp upgrades will also be provided as needed. New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of Route 33.
Route 33 alternately carries one-to-two travel lanes in each direction within the resurfacing project limits. Resurfacing work will be performed at night - with single lane closures and traffic shifts - in order to minimize traffic impacts on Route 33. Access will be maintained to all businesses and residences along the state highway throughout construction.
The project, which was designed in-house by NJDOT engineers, is scheduled for completion by fall of 2014.
