Palisades Parkway northbound Exit 1 and scenic overlooks to be closed overnight next week
Daytime curb work to take place on other ramps
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the Palisades Interstate Parkway northbound Exit 1 on and off ramps will be closed overnight next week, along with two scenic overlooks, as milling and paving operations continue.
At 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 13 until 5:30 a.m. Thursday, August 14, NJDOT’s contractor, Tilcon New York Inc., is scheduled to close the Exit 1 ramps in the northbound direction for milling and paving. The following detours will be in place:
• Motorists on the Palisades Parkway northbound wishing to exit at Exit 1 will be directed to Exit 2 to Route 9W northbound to Palisades Parkway southbound to Exit 1.
• Motorists wishing to get onto the Palisades Parkway at Exit 1/Palisades Avenue will be directed to Route 9W northbound to Exit 2, where they can get back on the Palisades Parkway.
On Thursday, August 14, the Rockefeller and Alpine Lookouts (scenic overlooks) will be closed at 8:30 p.m. through 5:30 a.m the following morning for milling and paving.
Other overnight work scheduled for next week includes milling and paving the upper portion of the right lane in the northbound direction to the state border and the lower portion of the southbound lanes toward the George Washington Bridge.
During the day from 10 a.m. through the afternoon Monday through Friday, crews will be doing curb work on several exit ramps. This work will not require any lane closures, however motorists should drive slowly and use caution when exiting.
The work is part of the $11.2 million, state-funded project that will resurface the parkway and the three scenic overlooks, and repair 13 bridge decks as needed. Although the Palisades Parkway is not a NJDOT road—it is owned and maintained by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission—NJDOT has stepped up to repair the road which is in unacceptable condition, particularly after the severe winter.
Motorists are advised to be alert for lane closures and traffic shifts, and are urged to drive safely and slowly through the construction zone.
Variable message signs will notify motorists of the traffic pattern changes. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
