Bridge deck replacement in Woodbridge will require detours

(Trenton) – The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced that Route 9 southbound and the ramp from Route 9 northbound to Green Street westbound in Woodbridge will be closed this weekend to replace the bridge deck.

At 8 p.m. Friday, October 17, NJDOT’s contractor, I.E.W., is scheduled to close Route 9 southbound at the Queen Road ramp until 5 a.m. Monday, October 20 to replace the existing deck with a new prefabricated deck. The ramp from Route 9 northbound to Green Street westbound also will be closed over the weekend at the same time.

A temporary detour will be in place:

Route 9 southbound
Motorists will be directed to exit Route 9 southbound at Queen Road to Green Street eastbound (CR604) to Route 9 southbound.

Route 9 northbound ramp to Green Street westbound
Motorists on Route 9 northbound will be directed to continue on Route 9 northbound until it merges with Route 1 and take the Route 35 northbound exit to Route 1&9 southbound to the Queen Road exit to Green Street (CR604).

Green Street westbound
Motorists on Green Street westbound will be directed to Oakwood Avenue to Route 9 northbound until it merges with Route 1 and take the Route 35 northbound exit to Route 1&9 southbound to the Queen Road exit to Green Street (CR604).

This work is part of an almost $6 million project that began in January 2014 to provide immediate safety improvements and congestion relief focused around the Route 9 interchange with Green Street (CR 604), located just south of the merge with Route 1 in Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County.

The purpose of the project is to provide immediate safety improvements on the state highway and local roadway connections, and to provide congestion relief along the Route 9 corridor.  The safety improvements include:

• Route 9 southbound will be reduced from three travel lanes to two lanes at the Queen Road intersection and extend the Green Street acceleration lane onto Route 9 southbound to help create a much safer merge condition. 

• Signage will be placed on Greet Street directing motorists seeking to access Green Street eastbound from Route 9 southbound to use the Queen Road intersection. 

• The existing highway shoulders will be reconstructed along both directions of Route 9 to provide for new deceleration lanes at the ramp connections to Green Street, creating safer and improved access. 

• Route 9 will be resurfaced from south of Oakwood Avenue up to the merge with Route 1

• Green Street will be resurfaced between Queen Road/Quality Way intersection to Oakwood Avenue

The other major component of the project is the replacement of the structurally-deficient Route 9 southbound bridge deck that spans over the ramp from Route 9 northbound to Green Street (and Route 1 southbound). 

In addition, the project includes myriad design and technological upgrades intended to improve traffic flow through the corridor including the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Green Street and Queen Road and improvements to the roadway drainage system and a new stormwater management basin. The project is scheduled for completion this fall.
