Route 35 reopened and

detour removed today in Bay Head
Traffic shift next week in Seaside Park as the project advances

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced Route 35 has been reopened and the detour removed from the intersection of Delaware Avenue in Point Pleasant Beach to Osborne Avenue in Bay Head as work on that section of roadway has been completed.

This afternoon, Friday, December 19, NJDOT’s contractor, Agate Construction Company, Inc., reopened the one block portion of Route 35 from Delaware Avenue in Point Pleasant Beach to Osborne Avenue in Bay Head that had been closed since November 24 to reconstruct the roadway and drainage in this area.
Seaside Park

On Monday, December 22, NJDOT’s contractor Union Paving will shift Route 35 traffic onto the newly reconstructed southbound lanes (west side) between H Street and 5th Avenue in Seaside Park to allow the contractor to begin the road reconstruction on the northbound lanes (east side).

In this section, Route 35 is normally two lanes in each direction with median parking. Currently all traffic is utilizing the northbound lanes (east side), with one lane in each direction.

Southbound traffic will shift to the newly constructed southbound lanes at H Street and return to the northbound lanes at 5th Avenue. Northbound traffic will shift to the newly constructed southbound lanes at 4th Avenue and return to the northbound lanes at G Street.

The newly restored median parking will be available through a portion of this area.

Toms River
Yesterday, Thursday, December 18, Route 35 northbound between Dewey Avenue and 6th Street in Toms River was restored to two lanes. This section of roadway had been reduced to one lane since construction resumed this fall.

Variable message signs will be used to notify motorists of all traffic pattern changes. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.

Project Details
Route 35, which is the backbone of the Barnegat Peninsula, was severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy and is being completely rebuilt. The $265 million project is divided into three geographic sections and began during the summer of 2013.

The new stone-and-asphalt roadway will be two feet thick, providing a more stable road and smoother driving surface. A new storm-water drainage system for Route 35 has been designed to handle 25-year storms and will feature nine pump stations and treatment facilities to filter and purify the storm water prior to discharge into Barnegat Bay.

NJDOT has an accelerated schedule for this project to accomplish a massive amount of work in as short a timeframe as possible to bring the shore back better than ever. The Department is advancing this project in a manner that balances the desire to work expeditiously with the need to accommodate residents, business owners and visitors during busy summer vacation seasons.

The Department has a robust community outreach effort that includes a hotline telephone number, 732-230-7356, and email address, restorenj35@mbi-gs.com for residents to pose questions or provide suggestions as work progresses.

NJDOT also has created a project-specific website that provides information on the proposed construction activity. The site will be updated as work advances.
