NJDOT awards contract to rehabilitate
Prospect Street Bridge in Dover Township

Federally funded project will
ensure the safety of structurally deficient bridge

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the award of a contract to rehabilitate the Prospect Street Bridge in Dover Township, Morris County.

The federally-funded $3.1 million project was awarded to Kyle Conti Construction, LLC to replace the superstructure and deck, and perform repairs to the substructure of the structurally deficient bridge that spans NJ Transit’s Morristown Line. The new structure will have two 12 foot, 6 inch lanes in each direction with an 8 foot, 6 inch sidewalk along either side.

“The importance of keeping these bridges in good repair cannot be overstated,” NJDOT Commissioner Jamie Fox said. “The planned work on the Prospect Street Bridge will ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians who use this bridge every day. Unfortunately, this bridge is not an anomaly, we have similar situations throughout the state and all demand attention sooner rather than later.”

Morris County officials closed the bridge to traffic and set up a detour on November 25, 2014 prior to a forecasted snow storm.  The closure occurred due to concern about the condition of the bridge deck and additional damage that could have resulted from snowplows.

After the storm, NJDOT thoroughly inspected the bridge and determined that the bridge should remain closed to traffic, although the department determined that emergency vehicles could use the center of the bridge deck if necessary.  Temporary support beams were installed in February to increase the structural integrity of the bridge while it awaited this more complete rehabilitation.

Construction is planned to start later this spring and is expected complete in the spring of 2016.
