Route 3 westbound lanes closed in Rutherford
Tractor trailer struck overpass at Orient Way; Motorists advised to seek alternate routes
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced all lanes on Route 3 westbound are closed following a traffic incident this afternoon in which a tractor trailer struck the Orient Way overpass in Rutherford, Bergen County.
Motorists should expect delays, potentially backing up to the Lincoln Tunnel, and seek alternate routes.
The following detour will be in place:
• Traffic will be directed to Route 17 south, which becomes Rutherford Avenue
• Turn Right on Ridge Road at the traffic light
• Turn Left onto Marginal Road
• Take the ramp onto Route 3 westbound.
The tractor trailer struck the Orient Way Bridge over Route 3, just west of Route 17 and the Meadowlands Sports Complex. Route 3 westbound is expected to be closed for several hours through the evening commute as emergency crews respond to the crash.
NJDOT engineers will evaluate the condition of the bridge and determine what repairs are required. Once the scope of damage is determined, a schedule for the repair will be established.
Route 3 eastbound traffic is not affected by the closure.
Regional variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public about the closure and motorists should follow detour signs when driving through the area.
Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org or call 511 hands-free for real-time travel information.
