(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the completion and reopening of the reconstructed Route 27 Six-Mile Run Bridge connecting Franklin Township, Somerset County, and North Brunswick, Middlesex County.
An overnight lane closure for final milling and paving work is necessary tonight before traffic can be shifted onto the newly reconstructed bridge.
Beginning at 8:30 p.m. tonight, Friday, June 19, NJDOT’s contractor, Carbro Construction Corp., is scheduled to close one lane of traffic for final milling, paving, and striping of the roadway. Single lane alternating traffic pattern will be performed overnight during final construction. The work is scheduled to be complete by 8 a.m. Saturday, June 20. Once complete, all traffic will be shifted onto the new bridge.
Construction on the $4.4 million project began in March 17, 2014. The original bridge, which was structurally deficient and functionally obsolete, was built in the early 1900’s and carried one 11-foot lane in each direction with narrow shoulders and no sidewalks.
The new bridge is wider, offering a single 12-foot-wide travel lane in each direction, a 10-foot-wide shoulder in each direction, and a sidewalk on the southbound side of the bridge. The project also included raising the bridge profile and modifying the approaches to improve sight distance, as well as drainage improvements.
The project site is located within the Six Mile Run Rural Historic District, listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1993 and on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Original stones from the masonry walls were salvaged and reused as a veneer for the front face of the new structure.
