Route 202 to be closed in both
directions at Route 17 interchange in Mahwah

Pavement reconstruction project requires detours

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced Route 202 will be closed in both directions at the Route 17 interchange in Mahwah for a pavement reconstruction project this weekend.

Beginning at 10 pm. Friday, August 28 until 5 a.m. Monday, August 31, NJDOT’s contractor Della Pello Paving, is scheduled to close Route 202 for pavement reconstruction. During the closure hours, ramps from Route 17 northbound to Route 202 eastbound and the ramp from Route 202 westbound to Route 17 southbound will be closed and traffic will be detoured. Access will be maintained for local businesses and the Hindu Samaj Temple.

The following detours will be in effect:

From Route 17 to Route 202:

  • Traffic from Route 17 southbound will be directed to West Ramapo Avenue to Route 202 westbound.
  • Traffic from Route 17 northbound will have access Route 202 eastbound.

From Route 202 to Route 17:

  • From Route 202 eastbound, traffic will be directed to West Ramapo Avenue where they can access Route 17 northbound or Route 17 southbound. Traffic wishing to continue on Route 202 eastbound must take Route 17 northbound to the ramp onto Route 202 eastbound.
  • From Route 202 westbound, traffic will be directed to Route 17 northbound, to the exit for Mountainside/Crossroad Boulevard, make the first left onto Crossroad Boulevard, travel over Route 17 onto Mountainside Avenue, and complete a U-Turn onto Route 17 southbound. Traffic wishing to continue on Route 202 westbound will be directed to turn onto West Ramapo Avenue and back onto Route 202 westbound.

The Route 17 Airmount Avenue to Route I-287 pavement reconstruction project is a $7.7 million federally-funded project, estimated to be completed in early 2016. NJDOT has designed the resurfacing work to be performed in the evening and on weekends allowing for local traffic flow through the area to minimize the effect on motorists.

Variable message signs and detour signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the reconstruction project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road or ramp closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
