Route 42 northbound lanes to be closed overnight for demolition work this week in Bellmawr
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced overnight lane closures on Route 42 northbound this week as the Direct Connection project advances in Camden and Gloucester counties.
Starting Monday, August 31 at 8:00 p.m., NJDOT’s Contractor, PKF-Mark III, Inc., will close 3 out of 4 lanes on Route 42 northbound to allow for the demolition of the old I-295 bridge over Route 42. Lanes will be closed Monday through Thursday nights as follows - 8:00 p.m. single lane closure, 10:00 p.m. double lane closure, 11:00 p.m. triple lane closure until 5:00 a.m. the following morning.
The following detour will be in effect for those driving on Route 42 northbound:
When all three lanes are closed, traffic on 42 northbound will be directed to take Exit 1B ramp to Route I-295 northbound. Motorists wanting to continue on Route 42 northbound/76 westbound will use Exit 27, which is a left exit.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with Direct Connection. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming lane closures or traffic shifts.
This work is part of the $900 million Direct Connection project that will provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange of I-295, I-76, and Route 42. The Direct Connection project has been divided into four separate construction contracts, with completion of the fourth and final contract expected in the fall of 2021. NJDOT's project website provides construction activity schedules and updates.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
