project begins this weekend

Project will replace dam and bridge

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a project to replace the Blue Anchor Dam and Bridge in Winslow Township, Camden County.

The Blue Anchor Dam was constructed in 1926 and sits on the Blue Anchor Brook in Camden County surrounded by the Route 30 roadway embankment. The $7 million project will replace the existing timber spillway with a concrete spillway that is capable of handling a 100-year storm event. NJDOT also will replace the bridge over the brook on Route 30 while providing eight foot wide shoulders along the roadway within the project limits. The project is expected to complete in spring of 2017.

Beginning 9:00p.m. Friday, September 25 through 6:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, Route 30 westbound and the left lane of Route 30 eastbound will be closed. There will be alternating traffic on Route 30 eastbound in the right hand lane from mile 25.65 to 25.98 (west of Wharton Ave. to Blue Anchor Brook) while NJDOT’s Contractor, JPC Group, installs a stream diversion bypass system.

“This important project will ensure that the Blue Anchor Dam can handle a storm like Superstorm Sandy,” NJDOT Commissioner Jamie Fox said. “The Department is committed to improving New Jersey’s roadways and ensuring the longevity of our infrastructure. This project will help avoid flooding and extend the lifespan of the roadway while protecting nearby properties.”

Portable and overhead variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
