Route 48 full closure for Layton Lake Dam
safety improvements project in Salem County


(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of safety improvement work on Layton Lake Dam and the replacement of the Route 48 Bridge in Carney’s Point, Salem County.

Beginning at 6 a.m. Friday March 11, and continuing until early 2017, NJDOT’s contractor South State Inc., is expected to close Route 48 in both directions in Carney’s Point to prepare the Layton Lake dam site for improvements by installing a cofferdam. They will also begin the demolition and replacement of the existing adjacent bridge structure. Motorists will be required to take the following detours:

From Route 48 eastbound:
• Motorists will be directed to turn left on to Pennsville-Auburn Road,
• Right on to Pennsgrove-Auburn Road,
• Right on to Pointers-Auburn Road,
• And then turn left back on to Route 48 eastbound.

From Route 48 westbound:
• Motorists will be directed to turn right on to Pointers-Auburn Road,
• Left on to Pennsgrove-Auburn Road,
• Left on to Pennsville-Auburn Road,
• And then turn right back on to Route 48 westbound.

The $6.8 million state- and federally-funded Layton Lake Dam project is expected to be completed in early 2017. The project includes the construction of a new bridge with a span of 40 feet, reconstructing and upgrading the drainage system, and the construction of a spillway. The project is designed to bring Layton Lake Dam into compliance with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Dam Safety Standards

Portable and overhead variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work.
