Railroad-crossing repairs begin this week in Carteret
Necessary safety work will require road closures and detours
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require a road closure and detour this week in Carteret, Middlesex County.
Two-way traffic on Roosevelt Avenue is scheduled to be closed at the Conrail freight railroad crossing near Irving Street and the Carteret Fire Department from 7 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, until 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19.
The following detour will be in place:
From Roosevelt Avenue to Peter J Sica Industrial Highway Detour
• Roosevelt Avenue traffic will be directed onto Peter J Sica Industrial Highway and back onto Roosevelt Avenue.
The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Carteret, the existing crossing will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
