Railroad-crossing repairs begin this week
on South Broadway in Pitman
Necessary safety work will require road closures and detours
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require a road closure and detour beginning this week in Pitman, Gloucester County.
Starting today, from 7 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, until 7 p.m. Thursday, July 14, the two-way traffic on South Broadway is scheduled to be closed between Laurel Avenue and West Jersey Avenue, before the Conrail grade crossing.
The following detours will be in place:
From Laurel Avenue and Ballard Avenue:
• Motorists on South Broadway near Laurel Avenue and Ballard Avenue will be directed onto Pitman Avenue. Turn right onto High Terrace, and make another right onto Crafton Avenue.
From West Jersey Avenue:
• Motorists on South Broadway near West Jersey Avenue will be directed to turn onto Crafton Avenue. Turn left onto Highland Terrace and make another left onto Pitman Avenue.
The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Pitman, the existing crossing will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
