Railroad-crossing repairs
begin next week in Swedesboro

Necessary safety work will require road closuresa and detours

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require the closure and detour of both Auburn Avenue and Bridgeport Avenue next week in Swedesboro, Gloucester County.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, August 8, until 7 p.m. Friday, August 12, the two-way traffic on Auburn Avenue/CR551 is scheduled to be closed between Mechanic Street and High Hill Road/Bridgeport Avenue; and Bridgeport Avenue is scheduled to be closed at the same time between Auburn Avenue and West Avenue. There are two JP Rail, Inc. railroad grade crossings that will be rehabilitated as part of the project, one on Auburn Avenue and one on Bridgeport Avenue. The following detours will be in place for local cars and trucks:

Cars from Auburn Avenue westbound:

• Motorists traveling westbound on Auburn Avenue will be directed onto Mechanic Street
• From Mechanic Street, motorists will make a right onto Kings Highway/CR605
• From Kings Highway/CR605, motorists will make another right onto Center Square Road and proceed back to Auburn Avenue/CR551.

Cars from Auburn Avenue eastbound:

• Motorists traveling eastbound on Auburn Avenue/CR551 will be directed onto Center Square Road
• From Center Square Road, motorists will make a left onto Kings Highway/CR605
• From Kings Highway/CR605, motorists will make another left onto Auburn Avenue/CR551

Truck Detour to/from Auburn Avenue:

• Trucks on Auburn Avenue/CR551 will be directed to use Route 322, Paulsboro Road and Kings Highway/CR605

Cars from Bridgeport Avenue:  

• Motorists traveling on Bridgeport Avenue will be directed to use Kings Highway/CR605, Center Square Road or Mechanic Street, and Auburn Avenue/CR551

The traffic detours will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.

In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Swedesboro, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
