Route 23 southbound ramp to
I-287 southbound reopened following
completion of emergency repairs in Riverdale

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the reopening of the exit ramp from Route 23 southbound to I-287 southbound following the completion of emergency repairs in Riverdale, Morris County.

The ramp reopened shortly after 9 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, August 10. NJDOT closed the ramp at approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday, August 8 to replace a collapsed drainage pipe that caused a washout undermining the integrity of the ramp from Route 23 southbound to I-287 southbound in the area of milepost 13.06 just west of I-287.

The repair consisted of excavating and removing the damaged pipe and installing approximately 35 feet of new 42-inch diameter drainage pipe. Guiderail needed to be removed and reinstalled and a 70-foot by approximately 15-foot section of the ramp was rebuilt using dense grade aggregate stone to fill in the area that was washed out and to create the base for paving new asphalt. The damage and repair was mostly on the shoulder of the ramp. The edge line stripe is scheduled to be applied in the next few days when drier weather is expected, and will require a temporary closure of the ramp. Until then, motorists can expect to see cones delineating the shoulder.
