I-280 eastbound ramp to Route 21 to close for interchange improvements in Newark
Detour in place for the weekend

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the temporary weekend closure of I-280 eastbound Exit 15 to Route 21 in Newark, allowing the I-280 and Route 21 Interchange Improvements Project to advance in Essex County.

Starting at 10 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, August 26, until 9 a.m. Sunday, August 28, NJDOT’s contractor, G. Harms Construction Co., Inc., is scheduled to temporarily close Exit 15 on I-280 eastbound to Route 21 in Newark to allow for continued construction. Traffic will follow a detour onto Exit 16 Harrison/Newark for access to Route 21. The following detour will be in place for motorists:

From I-280 eastbound to Route 21 Newark:
• Motorists traveling on I-280 eastbound will take Exit 16 and make a right onto Harrison Avenue/CR508 west in Harrison
• Motorists continue on Harrison Avenue/CR508 west over the Passaic River as it becomes Bridge Street
• Motorists on Bridge Street will continue to an intersection with Route 21 in Newark

The $93 million federally-funded project, which started construction in September 2015, will demolish existing structurally deficient bridge decks, reconfigure the interchange to provide full movements and consolidate entrance points. NJDOT has coordinated with local officials throughout the design process. The I-280 and Route 21 Interchange Improvements Project is being accomplished in stages, and is expected to be completed in early 2019.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvements project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
