Deteriorated beams require immediate repair
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the immediate closure of the right lane on Route 35 northbound over the Perth Amboy Connector/CR 624 for emergency bridge repairs.
In June, a scheduled inspection of the bridge, which is about a half a mile north of the Route 35 Victory Bridge over the Raritan River, identified deterioration in a beam requiring the closure of the right northbound lane of the bridge to truck traffic.
Due to further deterioration, NJDOT officials this morning closed the lane to all traffic in order to make immediate emergency repairs. The closure is expected to remain in effect for approximately one month.
The bridge carries two lanes of traffic in each direction with no shoulders and includes a sidewalk on both sides. A project to replace the entire bridge is in final design and is scheduled to go out to bid in the spring 2017. The replacement project is expected to take about two years and will widen the bridge to include shoulders.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info. |
