Railroad-crossing repairs begin this week
on 16th Avenue in Belmar
Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require road closures and detours beginning this week in Belmar, Monmouth County.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday, October 6, until 7 p.m. Thursday, October 13, the two-way traffic on 16th Avenue is scheduled to be closed between West Railroad Avenue and East Railroad Avenue, before the railroad grade crossing. The following detours will be in place:
From 16th Avenue east:
• Vehicles traveling east on 16th Avenue will be directed north to Route 71/H Street to Route 35 north
• Make a right onto 10th Avenue
• Then a right on Main Street south to 16th Avenue
From 16th Avenue west:
• Vehicles traveling west on 16th Avenue will be directed to make a right on Main Street north to 10th Avenue
• Make a left on 10th Avenue to Route 35 south
• Then a left onto Route 71 south/H Street to 16th Avenue
From Route 35:
• Vehicles traveling on Route 35 in either direction will be directed onto 10th Avenue
• Then a right on Main Street (south) to 16th Avenue
The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Belmar, the existing crossing will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
