Route 31 traffic shift on bridge
over
CSX Railroad in Mercer County
Traffic shift required for next stage in
bridge reconstruction project
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a traffic shift on Route 31 northbound as work advances on the CSX bridge reconstruction project in Mercer County.
Beginning tonight at 10 p.m. Friday, October 28, until 8 a.m. Saturday, October 29, NJDOT’s contractor Ritacco Construction Inc., is scheduled to prepare for the demolition and replacement of the northbound side of the Route 31 Bridge over the CSX rail line between Hopewell and Pennington. Traffic will be temporarily shifted onto the southbound side of the bridge, which was recently made wider to create more room for the traffic shifts during construction. Traffic will be in this configuration for approximately a year. Once the traffic shift is in place, one 11-foot lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction.
Due to the temporary narrow lanes created by the construction work zone, wide-load trucks are prohibited access to the bridge and must use alternate routes.
NJDOT has designed this federally-funded $13.6 million bridge replacement project to be completed in stages. The project, which started in summer 2016, is expected to be completed by fall 2018.
Variable message signs and lane closure signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the project. NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
