East end of northbound Skyway deck complete

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the Pulaski Skyway northbound deck installation is complete allowing southbound traffic to be shifted entirely onto the newly redecked northbound lanes as the rehabilitation of the historic 84-year-old bridge advances. 

In order to move the crossover point where southbound traffic is shifted onto the northbound lanes, the Skyway is scheduled to be closed in both directions along with several ramps at various times from Friday night through Sunday afternoon. Currently, southbound traffic is shifted onto the northbound lanes at Span 45, before the Broadway Ramp. By Sunday afternoon, southbound traffic will be shifted onto the northbound lanes approximately a half mile sooner at Span 0, which is over the Tonnele Circle.

Beginning at 11 p.m. Friday, November 11, until mid-day on Saturday, November 12, NJDOT’s contractor, CCA Civil Inc.-Daidone Joint Venture, is scheduled to close the ramp from Route 139 westbound to I-280/Route 7 and Route 1&9 Truck southbound.

The following detours will be in place:

Skyway southbound traffic:
All southbound Skyway traffic will be diverted from Route 139 westbound to the Tonnele Circle and then directed back onto the Skyway using the ramp from the Circle to the Skyway.  The Skyway southbound will be reduced to one lane.

I-280/Route 7 traffic:
Traffic wishing to use I-280/Route 7 will be directed from Tonnele Circle to Route 1&9 Truck northbound to the jughandle at County Road where traffic will make a U-turn and take Route 1&9 Truck southbound to Route 7.

Mid-day on Saturday, November 12, the ramp from Route 139 westbound to I-280/Route 7 and Route 1&9 Truck southbound is scheduled to reopen and the Skyway is scheduled to be closed completely in both directions after that point including the southbound on ramp from Tonnele Circle. The Skyway is scheduled to reopen at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 13 with all southbound traffic shifted onto the newly completed northbound lanes for the entire length of the Skyway.

NJDOT has created a video that shows options for alternate routes to help motorists navigate the full closure, which can be found on the NJDOT YouTube channel.

The following detours will be in place during the full closure from Mid-day, Saturday through 3 p.m. Sunday:

Southbound Traffic (toward Newark):

Leaving the Holland Tunnel, motorists will have the following options:

• Stay to the far right and take the NJ Turnpike-Hudson County Extension to all destinations west and south, including I-78.

• Stay to the left and follow signs for Route 139 West, then stay left to Route 1&9 Truck southbound towards Newark, Route 7 and I-280. 

• Motorists should avoid the ramp from Route 139/Covered Roadway that leads into the Tonnele Circle because of expected heavy congestion. 

Local Traffic for Jersey City:

• Stay to the middle to take Route 139 Upper Roadway and follow signs to Kennedy Boulevard/Jersey City, to best access many local Jersey City locations and other points north (Secaucus).

Northbound Traffic (toward Jersey City):
Northbound traffic will continue to utilize the same Skyway alternate routes that have been in effect since the northbound lanes were closed last year:

• NJ Turnpike-Hudson County Extension
• Route 1&9 Truck northbound
• Communipaw Avenue to access local Jersey City Locations.

NJDOT created a project-specific website - www.pulaskiskyway.com - which contains a wealth of information about the Skyway and the project, and will be updated with relevant new information as work progresses. The Department is carefully coordinating the Pulaski Skyway project with other regional transportation infrastructure projects to minimize traffic congestion.
