Route 55 southbound shoulder closure required for start of resurfacing project in Cumberland County
Additional overnight lane closures necessary for bridge work
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the right shoulder would be closed this week to allow for the start of a Route 55 Southbound Resurfacing project in Cumberland County.
Beginning Thursday, February 16, and continuing weekdays from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day, NJDOT’s contractor, South State, Inc. is scheduled to close the right shoulder on Route 55 southbound to install a silt fence and inlet protection in preparation for milling and paving between Schooner Landing Road in Millville and Sherman Avenue in Vineland.
As construction advances, additional lane closures will be required during the daytime from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., and overnight hours for bridge work. Neither long-term lane closures nor temporary daytime lane closures will be allowed during the peak summer season. The project is being accomplished in stages and is expected to be completed in fall 2018.
The $7.8 million federally-funded resurfacing project includes the resurfacing of Route 55 southbound for approximately five miles, and improvements to the bridge over Menantico Creek. These improvements include reconstruction of parapets, approach slabs, guiderails, inlet grates, and the replacement of the asphalt overlay upon the bridge with a concrete bridge deck.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the resurfacing project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
