I-78 ramp over Routes 1&9 weekend closures
begin in Newark
Weekend detours required for bridge deck construction project
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a series of long-term weekend ramp closures and detours from the Port Street ramp to I-78 over Routes 1&9 for the replacement of three bridge decks in Essex County.
The ramp closures are part of I-78 interchange 58 located just north of Newark Liberty International Airport, connecting with Port Street, a major entrance/exit from Port Newark. The project primarily affects traffic heading to or from airport cargo facilities and Economy Parking Lot P6 on Brewster Road, and traffic going to or from Port Newark.
Beginning March 10, NJDOT’s contractor Union Paving and Construction Inc., is scheduled to start a series of weekend ramp closures from I-78 to Routes 1&9 requiring detours. The closure times are from 8 p.m. Friday night until 5 a.m. Monday morning. A series of weekend closures are scheduled to continue most weekends through the fall, except holidays and restart again in the spring of 2018.
On most weekends the detour will utilize Frontage Road. However, some weekends will require a full closure of the ramp and a detour utilizing Delancey Street. Both detours are signed.
FRONTAGE ROAD DETOUR:
From Port Street to the I-78 Interchange (I-78 East/I-78 West/Route 1&9 South):
• Motorists from Port Street/Port Newark will be directed to make a right onto the Frontage Road loop just before the closed ramp • Continue on Frontage Road to cross under Routes 1&9 and turn left at the intersection entrance for I-78 West/Route 21 North/Route 22 West/Routes 1&9 South local ramps • For I-78 West to Garden State Parkway, stay in the right lane at fork to merge onto I-78 West • For I-78 East to I-95/NJ Turnpike and for Routes 1&9 to Route 21 and Route 22, stay left at fork
Occasional full closures of the Frontage Road ramp will be necessary, requiring motorists to use the following Delancey Street detour:
DELANCEY STREET DETOUR:
From Port Street to the I-78 Interchange (I-78 East/I-78 West/Route 1&9 South):
• Motorists from Port Street/Port Newark will be directed to make a right to the Routes 1&9 North Exit, just before the Frontage Road loop • Continue on Routes 1&9 North local and make the first right exit to Delancey Street. • Make a left on Delancey Street, underneath Routes 1&9 north, and make the first left onto Stockton Street. • Follow along the Stockton Street/South Street loop and make the first right onto Routes 1&9 south. • Follow Routes 1&9 south to the I-78 Interchange.
The $26.6 million federally-funded project will replace three structurally-deficient bridge decks over Routes 1&9 with new pre-cast bridge deck panels, parapets, guiderail and lighting. The project will be completed in stages with the majority of work being done overnight or on weekends to minimize impacts on motorists and marine terminal traffic. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
Variable message signs and lane closure signs will be utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the deck replacement project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
