I-495 westbound lane and ramp to Routes 1&9 northbound closures necessary for two evenings as signal work continues in Hudson County
Closure will require detours in the surrounding areas

(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced two overnight closures of the right lane on I-495 westbound and the I-495 westbound ramp to Routes 1&9 northbound for the continuation of overhead signal installation work in Hudson County.

Starting at 11:00 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, April 5, until 5 a.m. tomorrow, and again on Thursday, April 6 from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next day, NJDOT’s contractor, Orchard Holdings LLC., is scheduled to close the right lane on I-495 westbound starting near Pleasant Avenue in Union City. Two lanes on I-495 westbound will be maintained from 11 p.m. until 1 a.m., an additional lane will be close from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m., resulting in one lane on I-495 westbound remaining open.

As a result, access from the I-495 westbound ramp to Routes 1&9 northbound/Ridgefield and Paterson Plank Road will be closed, and traffic will be directed to Route 3 westbound to follow a detour.

The 31st Street/Union City acceleration lane onto I-495 westbound will be closed prior to the exit for Routes 1&9 southbound. Motorists from 31st Street traveling to Route 3/Routes 1&9 southbound and the NJ Turnpike will be directed to Paterson Plank Road to follow a detour.

The closures and detours are necessary for the ongoing installation of overhead signals and infrastructure, which is in preparation for an upcoming I-495 Viaduct Rehabilitation project expected to begin in summer 2018. The following detours will be in effect:

Detour for I-495 westbound to Routes 1&9 northbound/Ridgefield:
The I-495 westbound ramp to the Routes 1&9 northbound/Ridgefield ramp will be closed overnight from 11 p.m. tonight Wednesday, April 5, until 5 a.m. tomorrow and again on Thursday, April 6 from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next day.

  • I-495 westbound motorists traveling to Routes 1&9 northbound will be directed past the Routes 1&9 exit to the Route 3 westbound, keeping right to the local lanes to the Local/Secaucus exit
  • From the Route 3 westbound local lanes, motorists will stay right and take the North Bergen exit onto Paterson Plank Road
  • Motorists will follow Paterson Plank Road onto the bridge over Tonnelle Avenue and make a left onto Routes 1&9 northbound

Detour for 31st Street entrance ramp to Route 3/Routes 1&9 southbound and NJ Turnpike:
Motorists from the 31st Street/Union City entrance ramp to Route 3/Routes 1&9 southbound and NJTurnpike will be detoured overnight from 11 p.m. tonight Wednesday, April 5, until 5 a.m. tomorrow and again on Thursday, April 6 from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next day.

  • Vehicles on the 31st Street ramp will be prevented from entering I-495 and directed to make a right to exit onto Paterson Plank Road
  • Make a left at the first signalized intersection to continue on Paterson Plank Road west and follow one of the following three detours:
    • Make an immediate left onto Routes 1&9 southbound (end of Routes 1&9 southbound detour)
    • OR Continue on Paterson Plank Road west to Route 3 (end of Route 3 detour)
    • OR Continue on Paterson Plank Road west over Route 3 to ramp for Route 3 eastbound to the NJTurnpike ramp (end of NJ Turnpike detour)

The $4 million state-funded Information Technology Services (ITS) construction project, which began in September 2015, requires temporary shoulder, lane, and ramp closures due to concrete foundation work and electrical installations. The installations include Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS) and Electronic Lane Control Signals (LCS) on westbound I-495. NJDOT is coordinating with the Port Authority of NY/NJ, the NJ Turnpike Authority, NJ TRANSIT, and local authorities to advance the project in stages and minimize impacts to motorists. The project, which will require additional closures and detours, is expected to be completed in summer 2017.

Construction signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
