Route 495 westbound closures necessary for three evenings next week as signal work continues in Hudson County
Temporary full overnight closures required at 15-minute intervals
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the closure of two right lanes on Route 495 westbound between the Lincoln Tunnel and New Jersey Turnpike, as well as temporary 15-minutes full closures of the roadway for three nights next week as the work on dynamic message signs advances in Hudson County.
Starting at 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, until 5:00 a.m. the next day, and again on Wednesday, April 26 and Thursday, April 27, NJDOT’s contractor, Orchard Holdings LLC., is scheduled to close two right lanes on Route 495 westbound starting near Pleasant Avenue in Union City. Between 12 midnight and 4 a.m. each night, there will be 15-minute intervals in which Route 495 westbound will be closed entirely for the pick-up and removal of sign structures.
In addition to closures on Route 495, Central Avenue at 31st Street in Union City will be narrowed to a single lane of one-way traffic from 10:00 p.m to 6:00 a.m. for crane operations. During this time, parking on Central Avenue at 31st Street will be temporarily suspended. All full road and lane closures will be coordinated between state and local police.
The closures are necessary for the ongoing removal and replacement of overhead signals and infrastructure, which is in preparation for an upcoming Route 495 Viaduct Rehabilitation project expected to begin in summer 2018.
The $4 million state-funded Information Technology Services (ITS) construction project, which began in September 2015, requires temporary shoulder, lane, and ramp closures due to concrete foundation work and electrical installations. The installations include Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS) and Electronic Lane Control Signals (LCS) on westbound Route 495. NJDOT is coordinating with the Port Authority of NY/NJ, the NJ Turnpike Authority, NJ TRANSIT, and local authorities to advance the project in stages and minimize impacts to motorists. The project, which will require additional closures and detours, is expected to be completed in summer 2017.
Construction signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work.
