Route 27 lane closures for Carter’s Brook bridge replacement in Somerset and Middlesex Counties
Alternating traffic required as culvert replacement advances
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a temporary lane closure and alternating traffic on Route 27 on the Carter’s Brook and Ten Mile Run Tributary culvert replacements project in Franklin, Somerset County and South Brunswick, Middlesex County.
Beginning at 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday, May 11, NJDOT’s contractor, Montana Construction Corp., will close one lane and alternate traffic on Route 27 at Carter’s Brook Bridge, in order to place concrete barriers, restripe and shift Route 27 northbound traffic to the right onto the completed portion of the new shoulder for the next stage in construction. The shift in traffic will remain in place for several months to allow for bridge work to continue in the center work zone.
Route 27 southbound will not be changed and will remain on the temporary bridge so that the center portion of the culvert bridge can be constructed. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on the bridge during construction.
The $3.37 federally-funded Carter’s Brook and Ten Mile Run Tributary culvert replacement project is expected to be completed by early 2018. The two culvert bridge replacements will occur in stages, with the Carter’s Brook culvert work occurring first. The new wider culverts will retain a single 12-foot wide travel lane in each direction, but will now also have an 8-foot wide shoulder in each direction. A temporary bridge is being constructed along the west-side of the existing culverts to allow for traffic flow to be maintained at all times.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the bridge replacements. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
