I-78 westbound ramp to I-287 southbound
overnight closure in Somerset County
Ramp and lane closures necessary for continued beam work
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced continued bridge work tonight requiring the closure and detour of the I-78 westbound ramp to I-287 southbound in Bedminster, Somerset County. The I-78 westbound Exit 29 ramp to I-287 northbound will remain open.
Beginning at 10:00 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, May 16 until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, NJDOT’s Contractor, Midlantic Construction LLC., is scheduled to close the right lane on I‑78westbound approaching Exit 29 to I-287/Route 202/Route 206. Exit 29 will be reduced to one lane and the I-78 westbound exit ramp onto I-287 southbound will be closed. The closure is necessary to continue beam installations on the new flyover bridge being constructed for I-78 eastbound to I-287 northbound. Motorists will be detoured using I-287 northbound.
In addition to the ramp closure, there will be temporary 15-minute slowdowns of I-287 southbound from 10 p.m. through 6 a.m. to allow for the erection of the beams.
I-78 westbound ramp to I-287 southbound Detour:
- Motorists will be directed to stay right and take the exit for I-287 northbound
- Take Exit 22B to Route 202/Route 206 northbound
- Motorists will need to stay right on Route 202/Route 206 northbound, and take the U-Turn exit at River Road onto Route 202/Route 206 southbound
- Stay right on Route 202/Route 206 southbound and take the exit for I-287 southbound
The $24.5 million federally-funded I-287/I-78/Route 202/Route 206 Interchange Improvements project will enhance safety and improve traffic operations between the existing I-287 interchanges with I-78 and Route 202/206. The erection of the steel beams form part of a new flyover bridge being constructed from I-78 eastbound to I-287 northbound. Two new bridges are to be constructed over I-287, one over northbound lanes, and another over southbound lanes. The project is expected to be completed in late 2019.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvement project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before any upcoming road or ramp closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
