Route 49 resurfacing project requires lane closures in Cumberland and Atlantic Counties

Temporary single lane with alternating traffic necessary

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a resurfacing project along approximately five miles of Route 49 that will require lane closures in Cumberland and Atlantic Counties. Reduced work hours will be maintained during the summer season on this shore route.

Next week, from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each day starting Tuesday, May 30 through Friday June 2, NJDOT’s contractor, South State Inc., is scheduled to temporarily close alternating shoulders on Route 49 eastbound and westbound for guiderail replacement work. All travel lanes will remain open.

Starting on Monday, June 5 from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning, and continuing Mondays through Thursdays until fall 2017, NJDOT’s contractor is scheduled to temporarily close a single lane on Route 49 with a single lane of alternating traffic for approximately one mile to mill and pave the roadway.

The project will begin on Route 49 from Estelle Manor Drive in Maurice River, Cumberland County, resurfacing approximately five miles to Head of River Road in Estelle Manor in Atlantic County. No lane closures will be permitted Friday through Sunday.

The $1.3 million state-funded Route 49 resurfacing project is expected to be completed by fall 2017. The project will include guiderail replacements along Route 49. NJDOT has designed the project to advance with temporary lane closures, reopening after each shift. All lanes will be maintained during the morning and evening commutes.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the resurfacing project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road or ramp closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
