Railroad-crossing repairs begin next week on
South Center Street in Elmwood Park
Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require the closure and detour of South Center Street this week in Elwood Park, Bergen County.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, June 12, until 7p.m. Thursday, June 15, the two-way traffic on Baekeland Avenue is scheduled to be closed at the railroad crossing between Linden Avenue and Chamberlain Avenue. The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach. The following detour will remain in place:
Southbound Detour - South Center Street Detour
- Motorists north of South Center Street will be directed to travel east on Linden Avenue
- Make a right to head southbound on Boulevard
- Travel over the railroad tracks and make a right on Van Riper Avenue
- Make a right on South Center Street
Northbound Detour - South Center Street Detour
- Motorists south of South Center Street will be directed to travel west on Van Riper Avenue
- Make a left to head northbound over the railroad tracks on Boulevard
- Make a left on Linden Avenue
- Continue to South Center Street
The traffic detour will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Elmwood Park, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
