Route 495 westbound lane closures this week for dynamic message sign installation in Hudson County
Temporary full overnight closures required at 15-minute intervals
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced overnight lane closures, as well as temporary 15-minute full closures of Route 495 westbound this week for the installation of overhead support structures and dynamic message signage, as the Information Technology Services construction project advances in Hudson County.
Monday, June 12 and Tuesday, June 13 – Right Lane Closures on Route 495 westbound
Beginning at 11 p.m. tonight, Monday, June 12 until 5 a.m. the next day, and again overnight on Tuesday, June 13, NJDOT’s contractor Orchard Holdings LLC., is scheduled to close one right lane on Route 495 westbound for the installation of an overhead sign structure on Route 495 westbound between Weehawken and North Bergen.
Wednesday through Friday, June 14 – 16 – Left Lane Closures on Route 495 westbound
Beginning at 11 p.m., Wednesday, June 14 until 5 a.m. the next day, and continuing on Thursday and Friday nights, NJDOT’s contractor, is scheduled to close one left lane on Route 495 westbound for the installation of an overhead sign structure on Route 495 westbound between Weehawken and North Bergen.
In addition, from Tuesday through Saturday morning, from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m., the center lane on Route 495 westbound from Park Avenue in Weehawken to Tonnele Avenue in North Bergen also will be closed.
Temporary Full Closures of Route 495 westbound overnight
Beginning Monday at midnight until 4 a.m. the next morning, and continuing each night Tuesday through Friday, there will be 15-minute intervals in which Route 495 westbound will be closed entirely to erect bridge mounted sign support structures.
The closures are necessary for the ongoing removal and replacement of overhead signs and infrastructure, which is in preparation for an upcoming Route 495 Viaduct Rehabilitation project expected to begin bridge deck work in 2018.
The $4 million state-funded Information Technology Services (ITS) construction project, which began in September 2015, requires temporary shoulder, lane, and ramp closures due to concrete foundation work and electrical installations. The installations include Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS) and Electronic Lane Control Signals (LCS) on westbound Route 495. NJDOT is coordinating with the Port Authority of NY/NJ, the NJ Turnpike, NJ TRANSIT, and local authorities to advance the project in stages and minimize impacts to motorists. The project, which will require additional closures and detours, is expected to be completed in summer 2017.
Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
