Routes 1&9 south/Route 46 west closed this weekend to replace bridge deck over Jones Road in Bergen County
Detour to use I-95; northbound traffic to GWB will be unaffected
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the full closure of Routes 1&9 southbound/Route 46 westbound to replace the bridge over Jones Road in Fort Lee, Bergen County.
Beginning at 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, July 7 until 5 a.m. Monday, July 10, NJDOT’s Contractor, J.F. Creamer and Son LLC. with Sanzari Inc., is scheduled to close Routes 1&9 southbound/Route 46 westbound between Main Street in Fort Lee and I-95 to replace the bridge deck of the southbound lanes over Jones Road. Later this month, the deck of the northbound lanes will be replaced.
During the closure, I-95 southbound Exit 72B to Route 1&9 southbound/Route 46 westbound will be closed and detoured. In addition, the Fletcher Avenue ramp to Route 1&9/Route 46 westbound will be closed and detoured.
I-95 southbound to Route 1&9 southbound Detour
- I-95 southbound traffic will be directed to continue on I-95 southbound to Route 46/The Ridgefields exit to Route 46 eastbound to Route 1&9.
Fletcher Avenue to Route 1&9 southbound Detour
- Fletcher Avenue traffic will be directed to continue to Main Street, turn right on Main Street and turn left to take the ramp onto Route 1&9 south/Route 46 west.
Traffic on Routes 1&9 northbound/Route 46 eastbound heading toward the George Washington Bridge will be unaffected by this weekend’s construction.
The structure, originally constructed in 1930, has been classified as structurally deficient. The $4.3 million federally-funded project will replace the structurally deficient bridge deck and superstructure with prefabricated decks over two separate weekends. Vertical under clearance of the new bridge will be increased, thereby improving safety.
Jones Road was closed in late June following the completion of the school year and will be closed to all vehicular traffic at the bridge for approximately three months. Pedestrian access under the bridge will be maintained except for the two weekends when the bridge deck and superstructure work is completed. A local detour is in place for the closure of Jones Road.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvement project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before any upcoming road or ramp closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
