Route 440 resurfacing project begins in Hudson County
Alternating lane and ramp closures necessary
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a resurfacing project that will require overnight lane and ramp closures on Route 440 for two and a half miles between Bayonne and Jersey City in Hudson County.
Beginning at 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next day each night, from Monday, August 14 to Friday, August 18, NJDOT’s contractor, Della Pello Paving is scheduled to temporarily close the shoulders on Route 440 in both directions between Access Road/40th Street in Bayonne and Mina Drive in Jersey City to install construction signs and complete preparation work in advance of the start of the milling and paving project.
Initial concrete ADA curb work on Route 440 from Access Road/40th Street to Mina Drive is estimated to begin the week of Monday, August 21. After the curb work is completed, milling and paving will begin. Resurfacing on Route 440 will occur with the following schedule:
Lane Closures
- Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and again from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day
- Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays and again from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturdays
- Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. the next day
- Sunday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day
Ramp closures when necessary will take place overnight from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., the next day and two consecutive ramps will not be closed simultaneously, to help accommodate detours.
The traffic detours will be coordinated with state police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.
The $6.1 million federally-funded Route 440 resurfacing project is expected to be completed in late 2017. Ramps on Route 440, as well as ADA and guiderail upgrades are included in the project. NJDOT has designed the milling and paving project to advance with temporary ramp and approaching lane closures, reopening after each shift.
Variable message signs and detour signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the resurfacing project.
