Route 23 lane closures necessary for
gas main replacement project in Essex County
Traffic shifted and reduced to one lane in each direction daily
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced lane closures on Route 23 northbound, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction for the start of utility work in Cedar Grove, Essex County.
Starting on Wednesday, August 16, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., and continuing Monday through Friday for the next several months, NJDOT’s contractor, Ferreira Construction is scheduled to close both lanes on Route 23 northbound for approximately one mile from Grove Avenue to Stevens Avenue in Cedar Grove for PSE&G gas main replacement work.
Route 23 normally maintains two lanes of traffic in each direction within the project area. During construction, Route 23 will be reduced to one lane in each direction with northbound traffic shifted to the southbound side of the highway.
At times, there may be limited overnight work necessary on Route 23 between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. the next day, Monday through Friday. The utility project is expected to be completed in early 2018.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with utility replacement project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
