Route 22 westbound to be reduced to one lane for bridge deck replacement in Warren County

Truck detour via I-78 to Pennsylvania necessary during construction

Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, August 25, NJDOT’s Contractor, Konkus Corporation, is scheduled to close the right lane of Route 22 westbound at South Hillcrest Boulevard for approximately a quarter mile to replace the bridge deck over the entrance ramp to Route 22 eastbound. The left lane will be reduced to an 11-foot wide lane requiring the following truck detour:

Route 22 westbound truck detour:

• Trucks on Route 22 westbound will be directed to use the left-lane U-turn between Lincoln Road and South Hillcrest Boulevard to Route 22 eastbound
• Follow Route 22 to I-78 westbound and continue into Pennsylvania
• Take Exit 71 for Route 33 northbound
• Take exit for Route 22 westbound

I-78 westbound to Route 22 westbound truck detour:

• Trucks on I-78 westbound will be directed to continue into Pennsylvania
• Take Exit 71 for Route 33 northbound
• Take exit for Route 22 westbound

The $2.4 million federally-funded project will replace the structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridge deck in two stages, maintaining a single lane of Route 22 westbound traffic in each stage. Once the right side of the bridge is completed this fall, traffic will be shifted onto the newly reconstructed side of the bridge to allow the left side to be replaced. Additional work on the project will include the replacement of the parapets and guiderails on both sides of the structure, milling and paving of the bridge approaches, and utility relocations. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2018.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the bridge deck replacement project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before any upcoming road or ramp closures.
