Route 46 and Route 208 pavement preservation project begins in Warren and Bergen Counties

Project also will preserve Route 206 pavement
in Somerset and Morris Counties

The $6 million state-funded project, announced by Governor Christie last month, was made possible due to funding from New Jersey’s job-creating Transportation Trust Fund.

Mobilization and prep work will begin today, Tuesday, August 29 on both Route 46 and Route 208, and is expected to be complete in late 2017, with construction on Route 206 to take place in the spring of 2018. Starting in the next week, depending on weather, NJDOT’s contractor, Asphalt Paving Systems Inc., is scheduled to close single lane sections on Route 46 and Route 208 each night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day for micro-milling and application of slurry seal. In addition, there may be lane closures from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for shoulder and curb work if necessary. Alternating lanes and traffic shifts will be required. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times. Short term overnight detours of ramps will be required and coordinated with local police.

This project will improve ride quality, extend the service life of the existing pavement and save future rehabilitation costs for taxpayers and thousands of motorists who travel these highways each day. The project will include limited drainage cleaning, micro-milling, and the placement of slurry seal in both directions to the travel lanes, shoulders, and ramps. NJDOT has designed the project to advance with temporary lane closures, reopening after each shift. All lanes will be maintained during the morning and evening commutes.

Route 46 – Warren County
The project will apply slurry seal in both directions on approximately seven miles of Route 46 from Pequest River in White Township through Liberty Township to Independence Township in Warren County. Construction will begin today and is expected to be completed in late 2017.

Route 208 – Bergen County
The project will apply slurry seal on approximately three miles of Route 208 in both directions, from Saddle River in Fairlawn to Boulevard Avenue in Glen Rock, Bergen County. Construction will take place concurrently with work on Route 46 and is expected to be completed in late 2017.

Route 206 – Somerset/Morris County
Next spring the project will apply slurry seal on approximately eight miles of Route 206 in both directions, from Bedminster just south of Lamington Road through Peapack-Gladstone in Somerset County, through Chester Township to near the shopping center in Chester Borough in Morris County. Construction is expected to begin in May 2018 and be completed in the summer of 2018.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the pavement preservation project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road or ramp closures.
