NJDOT advises of detours and lane closures
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) officials today announced multiple overnight lane closures on Route 17 in Paramus to permit ongoing demolition of Garden State Parkway (GSP) Bridge as part of a New Jersey Turnpike Authority project.
Beginning Monday, October 2 from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next day, the NJ Turnpike Authority is scheduled to close one right lane on Route 17 northbound or Route 17 southbound near the GSP Interchange 163 for bridge demolition work in Paramus, Bergen County. A second right lane will be closed in either direction from 11 pm. until 12 a.m. the next morning.
From 12 a.m. until 4a.m., all lanes will be closed in one direction and detoured. One lane of Route 17 will be reopened from 4 a.m. until 6 a.m. All lanes will be reopened by 6:00 a.m.
The Route 17 closures will alternate in direction from northbound to southbound every two or three evenings for the next few weeks. The following detours will be in place accordingly.
Route 17 Northbound Detour (from 12 a.m. until 4a.m.):
- Motorists on Route 17 northbound will be directed to the Century Road/Fairlawn exit
- Make a left onto Century Road and continue on the bridge over Route 17
- Make a left onto Fairview Avenue
- Make a left onto Midland Avenue
- Continue onto the Route 17 northbound entrance
Route 17 Southbound Detour (from 12 a.m. until 4a.m.):
- Motorists on Route 17 southbound will be directed to the Midland Avenue exit
- Make a left onto Midland Avenue and continue on the bridge over Route 17

- Make a right onto Century Road
- Bear left to cross over Route 17 and then bear right onto the Route 17 southbound entrance
This week’s bridge work is part of an ongoing NJTA bridge replacement contract to relocate GSP exits onto Route 17 from the left side of the road to the right side of the road by realigning the GSP in the vicinity of Interchange 163. The project, which began in 2014 is scheduled to be completed in 2017. Additional lane closures during off-peak hours may be necessary until project completion. NJTA has designed the project to advance with temporary lane closures, reopening after each shift.
Variable message signs and detour signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvements project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road or ramp closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
