Route 3/Route 46 westbound to Valley Road ramp and lane closures necessary this week in Passaic County

Overnight detours required as improvements project advances

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced overnight closures this week of the Route 3/Route 46 ramps to and from Valley Road, as well as lanes on Route 46 westbound, for the Route 3/Route 46 Valley Road and Notch/Rifle Camp Road Interchange Improvements Project in Passaic County.

Starting at 9 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, December 6 until 6 a.m. the next day, and continuing nightly on Thursday, December 7 and Friday, December 8, NJDOT’s contractor, J.F. Creamer & Sanzari, is scheduled to close the Route 3/Route 46 ramps to and from Valley Road to install construction barriers and restripe travel lanes on Route 46 westbound for ongoing roadway improvements. In addition, temporary lane closures on Route 46 westbound between Valley Road and Rifle Camp Road will be necessary. At least one lane of Route 46 westbound traffic will remain open at all times. The following signed detours will be in place:

Route 3/Route 46 westbound to Valley Road detour:

  • Route 3/Route 46 westbound motorists will continue to the Lower Notch Road/U-turn exit
  • Follow the U-turn onto Route 46 eastbound
  • Continue to the Valley Road exit

Valley Road to Route 46 westbound detour:

  • Valley Road motorists will continue to the Route 3 eastbound exit
  • Take the Grove Street exit
  • Follow to Route 3 westbound
  • Merge onto Route 46 westbound

The $40.8 million federally-funded Contract A portion of the Route 3, Route 46, Valley Road and Notch/Rifle Camp Road Interchange Improvements project, which started construction in January 2016, includes the construction of a new two-way service road, three signalized intersections, and two single-lane roundabouts parallel to Route 46 westbound to remove local traffic from the state highway. The project is being accomplished with two contracts, and is expected to be completed in fall 2022.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvements project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road or ramp closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
