Route 31 traffic shift to be implemented on bridge over CSX Railroad in Mercer County
Next stage of bridge reconstruction project begins
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a traffic shift on Route 31 as work advances on the CSX bridge reconstruction project in Mercer County.
Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Friday, December 15, until 8 a.m. Saturday, December 16, NJDOT’s contractor Ritacco Construction Inc., is scheduled to shift traffic to the newly completed northbound side of the 31 Bridge over the CSX rail line between Hopewell and Pennington.
Route 31 northbound traffic will be temporarily shifted to the east side of the bridge, while southbound traffic will be temporarily shifted to the west side of the bridge to create a center work zone. Traffic will be in this configuration for approximately a year. Once the traffic shift is in place, one 11-foot lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction.
Due to the temporary narrow lanes created by the construction work zone, wide-load trucks are prohibited access to the bridge and must use alternate routes.
NJDOT has designed this federally-funded $13.6 million bridge replacement project to be completed in stages. The project, which started in summer 2016, is expected to be completed by fall 2018.
Variable message signs and lane closure signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the project. NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
