NJDOT crews complete clearing Atlantic City streets of snow
Crews worked non-stop to reopen 100 city blocks following Winter Storm Grayson
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced it has completed assisting Atlantic City in clearing snow from approximately 100 city blocks following Winter Storm Grayson. On Saturday, Mayor Frank Gilliam asked for NJDOT help in clearing snow from emergency routes to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center and several schools.
“NJ Department of Transportation is proud of our crews who assisted Atlantic City recover from one of the biggest snowfalls to hit the region in recent memory,” NJDOT Commissioner Richard T. Hammer said. “Our personnel are second to none, whether they are keeping State highways clear and safe or helping a city in need remove snow to ensure emergency routes are clear.”
NJDOT provided approximately 50 pieces of snow-fighting equipment and about 80 NJDOT personnel, along with NJ State Police personnel to assist Atlantic City. Crews began working around noon on Saturday, January 6 and worked continuously through 6 a.m. today, Monday, January 8 helping to clear 1,313 truckloads of snow from approximately 100 blocks of Atlantic City streets and from school property of 10 city schools.
Working with Atlantic City officials and emergency personnel, a plan was developed to first open up emergency routes to the hospital, then the next priority was to open up paths to the schools, and finally opening up side streets.
NJDOT provided the following equipment:
- Twenty-six (26) six-ton dump trucks equipped with plows and salt spreaders
- Nine (9) front end loaders
- Thirteen (13) Bobcats
- Two (2) Contractor Bulldozers
- Several Pickup trucks with plows
NJDOT was assisted by the NJ Office of Emergency Management, and NJ State Police. NJDOT crews and equipment have returned to their normal maintenance yards and are preparing for this afternoon’s expected wintry mix, which could causing icing conditions on roads.
