Route 27 resurfacing project begins in
Middlesex County

Alternating daytime lane closures necessary

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a resurfacing project that will require alternating daytime lane and shoulder closures along three miles of Route 27 between Bridge Street in Metuchen and Frederic Street in Edison, Middlesex County.

The $3.3 million federally-funded Route 27 paving project will resurface approximately three miles of Route 27 in both directions between Bridge Street in Metuchen and Frederic Street in Edison. The project will rehabilitate the existing pavement which is exhibiting various types of cracking and deterioration. In addition, seven signalized Route 27 intersections within the project area will receive safety improvements. The project is expected to be completed in late 2018.

The following seven (7) Route 27 intersections are scheduled to receive improvements such as ADA curbs, new signal heads, pedestrian signals, push buttons, and traffic cameras where needed:

1) Bridge Street
2) Lake Avenue/Central Avenue
3) New Street
4) Main Street
5) Grove Avenue
6) James Street and Parsonage Road
7) Evergreen Road/CR 657

Beginning at 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on both Thursday, March 1, and Friday, March 2, NJDOT’s contractor, Intercounty Paving Associates, LLC., is scheduled to temporarily close the shoulders along Route 27 in both directions between Bridge Street and Frederic Street in Middlesex County to install construction signs and start preparation work in advance of the start of the overnight milling and paving.

Once the signs are in place, additional daytime and evening closures will be required for traffic signal upgrades and concrete ADA curb work on Route 27. Overnight milling and paving is expected to begin this spring, after shoulder work is completed.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the resurfacing project.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
