Routes 1&9 ramp to Port Street weekend closures begin as bridge replacement project advances
in Newark

Detour necessary during ramp closures

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a full closure this weekend of the Route 1&9 northbound local ramp to Port Street, as the bridge deck replacement project advances in Newark.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, March 16 until 3 a.m. Monday, March 19 and continuing for several weekends, NJDOT’s contractor Union Paving and Construction Inc., is scheduled to be close the Route 1&9 northbound local ramp to Port Street to resume removing and replacing the bridge decks and bridge parapets.

The following detour will be in place on weekends starting on Friday at 10 p.m. until Monday at 3 a.m. for approximately two months.

Route 1&9 northbound local lanes to Port Street Detour:
  • Motorists from Route 1&9 northbound local taking exit for Port Newark will be directed to stay right and merge onto Brewster Road
  • Bear right to follow Brewster Road and stay in the Left-Turn-Only lane
  • Continue around the loop to the Port Street intersection
  • Make a right at the second traffic light onto Port Street

In addition, as announced last weekend, Exit 58A: the I-78eastbound ramp to Routes 1&9 southbound/Port Newark and the I-78 westbound/Route 1&9 southbound ramps to Port Newark will continue to close on weekends until late 2018 for bridge deck reconstruction.

The $26.6 million federally-funded Route 78 over Routes 1&9 Bridge deck replacement project which started in February 2017, will replace three structurally-deficient bridge decks over Routes 1&9 with new pre-cast bridge deck panels, precast pavement panels, parapets, guiderail and lighting.

This last construction stage, which is now beginning includes final deck and slab installations, as well as new parapets, guiderails and lighting. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2018. The project is being completed in stages with the majority of work being done overnight or on weekends to minimize impacts on motorists and marine terminal traffic.

Variable message signs and lane closure signs will be utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the deck replacement project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
