Railroad crossing repairs to close Union Avenue and Brown Avenue in Lakehurst for two weeks
Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require a two-week long closure and detour of Union Avenue and Brown Avenue in Lakehurst, Ocean County.
Beginning at 7 a.m., Monday, March 19, until 7 p.m. Friday, March 30, the two-way traffic on Union Avenue and Brown Avenue are scheduled to be closed. Union Avenue will be closed at Center Street and Brown Avenue will be closed at Second Street. Residents and businesses on Union Avenue and Brown Avenue will be allowed limited access during construction.
The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach. The following detours will be in place:
Union Avenue eastbound detour
• Vehicles traveling east on Union Avenue will be directed to turn left onto Center Street, then right onto Route 70 and right onto Brown Avenue
Brown Avenue westbound detour
• Vehicles traveling west will take Route 37 and merge onto Route 70 west at the circle, then turn left onto Center Street
The traffic detours will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Lakehurst, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program, which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
