Railroad-crossing repairs begin in Burlington City
Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require a five-day long closure and detour of the Keim Boulevard railroad crossing in Burlington City near the Burlington Bristol Bridge.
Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Friday, March 23, until 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, traffic traveling into New Jersey across the Burlington Bristol Bridge will be detoured after the tollbooth so that work on the rail crossing, across the southbound side of Reed Street/Keim Boulevard, can be done. The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach.
The following detour will be in place:
Reed Street southbound detour
• Vehicles exiting the toll plaza traveling south on Reed Street will be directed to turn right onto Veterans Drive, then left onto Commerce Square Boulevard, then left onto West Broad Street
• Vehicles traveling northbound on Keim Boulevard toward Reed Street will not be effected
Work on the existing railroad portion of the crossing will take place over the weekend so that rail traffic can resume on Monday morning.
Over the weekend, New Jersey Transit light rail travelers on the River Line, traveling in both directions, will need to exit the train at either the Burlington Towne Center Light Rail Station or the Burlington South Light Rail Station. Buses will be provided at each station for travelers to cross to the opposite side of the tracks and re-embark onto the appropriate train.
The road will remain closed and detoured on Monday and Tuesday for milling and paving for the new asphalt approach.
The traffic detours will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Burlington City, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally-funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program, which repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
