Railroad-crossing repairs begin in Point Pleasant Beach
Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require a 10-day closure and detour of Forman Avenue in Point Pleasant Beach, Ocean County.
Beginning at 9 a.m., tomorrow, Friday, March 30, until 7a.m., Monday, April 9, the two-way traffic on Forman Avenue, between Cincinnati Avenue/Route 35 northbound and St. Louis Avenue, is scheduled to be closed at the railroad crossing. Forman Avenue will be open to local traffic only. The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach.
As part of the project, Forman Avenue will be converted to a one-way street heading eastbound with angled parking on the right side of the street and a curb bump-out at each end near the railroad crossing at Cincinnati Avenue and near St. Louis Avenue to denote the parking area. The railroad crossing surface area will be decreased to one lane, allowing only the eastbound traffic to cross the railroad tracks.
The change is being done after meeting with local stakeholders when it was determined that the existing railroad signal design had poor sightline distance which created a potentially hazardous condition that would be best resolved by making Forman Avenue one way.
The following detours will be in place:
Richmond Avenue (Route 35 southbound)
Vehicles traveling southbound on Richmond Avenue will be directed to make a left onto Atlantic Avenue to cross the train tracks and then left at St. Louis Avenue
Cincinnati Avenue (Route 35 northbound)
Vehicles traveling northbound on Cincinnati Avenue will be directed to make a right onto Arnold Avenue and then right onto St. Louis Avenue
Forman Avenue westbound
Vehicles traveling on Forman Avenue westbound will make a left onto St. Louis Avenue and right onto Atlantic Avenue and right onto Cincinnati Avenue
Forman Avenue eastbound
Vehicles traveling on Forman Avenue eastbound will make a left onto Cincinnati Avenue and right Arnold Avenue and then right onto St. Louis Avenue
The traffic detours will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Point Pleasant Beach, Ocean County, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program that repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
