Routes 1& 9 southbound lane and ramp closures required for improvements project in Newark

Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue operational improvements advances

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced temporary lane and ramp closures on Routes 1&9 southbound near Haynes Avenue as the Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue improvements project advances in Essex County.

Beginning at 9 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, April 7, until 7 a.m. the next day, NJDOT’s contractor Anselmi and Decicco, Inc., will close the ramp from Route 22 eastbound to Routes 1&9 southbound local, as well as one lane on Routes 1&9 southbound local between the ramp and past the Hanes Avenue exit, approximately 400 feet before the Newark Liberty International exit ramp to install construction barriers and restripe the highway. Routes 1&9 southbound will be split into two lanes, maintaining airport traffic on the left lane and local business access on the right lane. The highway split is expected to remain in place for several weeks.

Additional overnight local lane and ramp closures will be necessary periodically for the next several weeks as the improvements project advances. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area.

Periodically, for the last few weeks, the Route 22 eastbound ramp to Routes 1&9 southbound local has been closed nightly and detoured to prepare for the traffic shift. The following overnight detour is expected to continue for a few more nights to ensure that preparations for the next stage in construction is complete.

Route 22 eastbound to Routes 1&9 southbound overnight detour:

  • Motorists on Route 22 eastbound will be directed to continue to Route 21 northbound
  • Take the exit for South Broad Street
  • Turn right onto Emmett Street
  • Turn right onto Route 21 southbound
  • Merge with Routes 1&9 southbound

The $14.2 million federally-funded Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue operational improvements project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow by constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Routes 1&9 southbound, Haynes Avenue, and Bessemer Street, adding a third lane and shoulder between the Haynes Avenue exit ramp and the Anheuser-Busch entrance ramp, a realignment of the Routes 1&9 southbound ramps, and new pavement on the roadways in the area. The project is being accomplished in stages, and is expected to be completed in summer 2018.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. Any traffic detours associated with this project will be coordinated with the local police. If work is completed earlier, the roadways will be reopened accordingly.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
